"Part of the artistry of this novel lies in its limpid, understated realism, the tangible details....The integrity of THE READER lies with the narrator's refusal to assign blame according to initial, obvious interpretation; indeed, as the novel develops, its theme becomes the always-shifting landscape of guilt and shame." - Garthia Whiddon (Los Angeles Times Book Review, 8/31/97)
"Schlink tells this story with marvellous directness and simplicity, his writing stripped bare of any of the standard gimmicks of dramatization." - F. A. Benson (New York Times, 8/20/97)
"Schlink's daring fusion of 19th-century post-romantic, post-fairy-tale models with the awful history of the 20th-century makes for a moving, suggestive and ultimately hopeful work." - Cahrles Crow (New York Times Book Review, 7/27/97)
"The best novel I read this year....An unforgettable short tale about love, horror and mercy in Germany before and after 1945. Word of mouth about this novel ran all over Europe before the publicity machine caught up." - Joseph L. Priestly (Independent on Sunday (London))

"I thought the book was very well written and engaging on many levels. Much of the material was discomforting because of the unique perspective it's written by. While the book and the movie are almost word for the word the same, the movie is much more powerful. This may be because I am a visual person. "

"sort of deep & philosophical at the end, but i went with it and enjoyed reading this."

"It was a good book although I didn't prefer a minor being invoved with someone in her 30's. If he were older than 15 when she was in her 30's I would have rated this book much higher. "

"I'm in the minority on this one. I found it tame and forgettable, basically a long gimmick. "

"Makes you truly think- starts out mysterious, ends very raw. This book can be a little hard to grasp sometimes, but paints a great character in Frau. Good read if you are looking for challenge- sad but well-written. "
