The Boston Women's Health Book Collective made history in 1970 when they published the first edition of OUR BODIES, OURSELVES, a revolutionary reference book about a topic not seen as overtly political or controversial. OUR BODIES, OURSELVES presented health information in a different and user-friendly manner, and advocated women's ownership of their health care. But mostly it was known for giving a wealth of information and good advice, both of which were unavailable elsewhere in a single source. In the years since, women's health has become an established subcategory in bookstores, and OUR BODIES, OURSELVES remains a trusted source. The editors acknowledge that "each new generation of women must define and grapple with its own issues in its own cultural and political context," as they provide information for an expansive and inclusive audience. Beginning with a chapter on self-image, including how women are objectified by a media that sets false standards of beauty, to specifics on health problems unique to women (fibroids) and health problems of special concern (urinary conditions), OUR BODIES, OURSELVES remains the single most recommended book on women's health for the general reader.
