Frank Portman, of the Mr. T Experience, mines familiar territory--the humiliation and hijinks of high-school--with marvelous results. Like his main character Tom Henderson, an affable dork who craves nothing more than a blowjob and a band, Portman sets the bar low, then leaps over it with flying colors. Portman (via Henderson) is painfully funny, and his observations about bullies, girls, and the ignominy of adolescence are wry and astute. When the plot--a murder mystery no less--kicks in, it is surprisingly intricate, and completely engrossing. A Kirkus Best Children's Book of 2006.
