A version of the Cinderella story from the point of view of one of the ugly stepsisters, in this case young Iris, who blossoms into an interesting person in her own right, even as the beautiful Clara wins the hand of the prince.

"[C]aptivating and beautifully written....CONFESSIONS is a rich canvas of colorful characters and fantastic events rendered by an artist attentive to every surface and texture." - Elizabeth Mukamaambo (Book, 10/1/99)
"Maguire may choose to launch his story with a children's fairy tale, but his ideas are anything but childlike. Adult and sophisticated, his musings on beauty, ugliness, magic, reality and imagination explore how our past follows us always and shapes our self-perception and how we see ourselves in the world....All the characters are precisely drawn, their motives plain for us to see, although they usually mistake each other's desires and ambitions....[A] bewitching story..." - Jeremiah Reedy (San Francisco Chronicle Book Review, 10/31/99)

"Amazing take on Cinderella from a different perspective. Rich with detail, imaginative and impressive story line. Full of surprises and the inner workings of the world and people. Definitely a fave of mine now and I did not find it boring at all. Had a hard time putting the book down. Loved the ending, especially the last few lines. Exquisite work!"

"Slow story line that never really builds to anything. Very odd spin on this classic fairy tale. I am a fan of Gregory Maguire's other books...just not this one! It wasn't terrible.. but as another reviewer put it, its weak and a bit boring."

"Ok read, the author has a great vocabulary and tries to write the story behind the "famous story", but its weak and kind of boring."
