about this list:
Books that helped shape not only my current love for the medium, but myself as a person.

1
Ender's Gameall users rating Ender's Game
Orson Scott Card
Carnane says:
A gripping, emotional, dynamic tale that gets better every time I read it. Not only is it one of the very best sci-fi books out there, the complex character interactions, blanketed by introspective gazes deep into the hearts of beings and the beautiful and awful effects of love keep this up there with some of literary history's greatest classics.
2
Of Mice and Menall users rating Of Mice and Men
John Steinbeck
Carnane says:
What can be said about this book? It's near perfect in its execution. Steinbeck doesn't abuse the English language like some authors, doesn't ask it to do too much like others, he uses just enough to give the reader a perfect description of rural California during the Great Depression. His descriptions are among the best in literature, and his deep, complex character interactions make this one

Fahrenheit 451all users rating Fahrenheit 451
Ray Bradbury
Carnane says:
Ray Bradbury has a way with characters, there's no denying that. He also has a way of not making plots overload a book with sometimes repetitive space filler. He uses the tense and oftentimes dangerous situations his characters are in as ways through which to develop their character, to create something that goes much deeper than the main conflict, a commentary that is both critical and congratu

East of Edenall users rating East of Eden
John Steinbeck
Carnane says:
This should tell you how much I love this book: I haven't even FINISHED it (by this point), and it's already topped books that I've read countless times. Though more ambitious, certainly, than a lot of his other works, Steinbeck gives one of his finest efforts in this modern day Cain and Abel epic, really.
5
The Giverall users rating The Giver
Lois Lowry
Carnane says:
You know, there's just something about this book being a children's book that amazes me. It was honestly written for kids in grades 3-6, and yet it is one of the most gripping commentaries on society and the burden of memories and emotions on men, whether good or bad.
6
A Clockwork Orangeall users rating A Clockwork Orange
Anthony Burgess
Carnane says:
I would go into how this is a fantastic book, how it shows the evils of manufactured obedience versus the choices people are allowed to make and how those can go awry, but honestly, I'll just say this: It's one of those definitive punk novels, coupled with its cinematic counterpart. It's a classic because of the amount of social change it has been able to accrue.
