Help this makes no sense.

I want the book "the help". So I go to the page that says "to get this item what do I need to trade." One of them listed is the book the memory keepers daughter, which is on my bookshelf. There is nowhere that say GET NOW.

I evern clicked on users with this book for the help and none had MKD on their wishlists. This makes no sense.

Most of the swaps are 3-way, so the person who wants your book is not the person who has the book you want. Sometimes, yes, but usually not. The search you did doesn't take into account traders who aren't available; you can't get the item now, but it 's possible you will be able to do so later. Best thing is to not use that search but instead to put any items you are willing to trade on your 'bookshelf', and either wait for someone to initiate a trade when they are available, or wait for the 'get now' link that will allow you to initiate a trade. You will see a message from SwapTree in the upper left corner when you log on that tells you that you can get an item on your want list.

Good luck...

Help this makes no sense

the book IS on my bookshelf. I don't understand this site. I use another site that is so much easier for this reason. It says a person with the help wants this book. I have the book. WTH Bobby.

swaptree REALLY needs to get rid of those horribly misleading lists. the "what can i get" and the "what do i need to trade" are almost usually completely inaccurate. using them as a standard by which to find out what you can actually get is pretty much a complete waste of time. more people complain and freak out because they see that they can get what they want from those pages and try to get it and find that its not coming up.

those lists take into account people who have paused accounts, are at their trade limits, have already rejected the same trades, have items that you wouldn't be able to even offer for, etc, etc, etc.
and those lists include the people who want your item, the people who don't want your item but want something that the person who wants your item has, and so forth.
so its very likely that you may not find a single person who has exactly what you want who wants exactly what you have. 2 way trades aren't as common as 3 way trades.

a prime example of how inaccurate those lists are is the fact that you can look up what you can get for your paperback and see ps3 and xbox360 or dvd box sets. yes, you might possibly find someone who is so desperate for your paperback that they will offer you those high value items........but its beyond extremely rare. you would NEVER see those items come up as a get it now because you will never be able to initiate a swap for a high value item for your regular value item. the system just doesn't allow it.

as paul said, the only way of knowing what you can get for your items is to add them to your have list and see if the items you want pop up on your "get it now" page. thats the only way to tell.

Well, I wouldn't say almost usually completely inaccurate, or a complete waste of time. More like 'not completely accurate'. I've done before and after searches, and was able to identify exactly why the items on the 'before' list were missing from the 'after' list.

Having said that, there is almost no reason to use the 'what do I need to have..." search- if you have it, add it to your list. If you don't have it, who cares what you can get? That search is the equivalent of asking, "is it OK if I ask a question?" Why ask a question in order to ask a question- smoke 'em if you got 'em, I say.

It sounds to me like you need to take the tour and read the FAQs. The system finds matches, you don't have to go looking for them and contacting people to find trades yourself.

The best way to search what you can get is to use the icons under your name, then refine the searches using the categories on the left. This will tell you what you can REALLY get for what you have, and takes into account those items not available to you for the reasons other posters have given above. Hope that helps.

thats the reason i think they should be gotten rid of. am i wrong or are most of the posts from new people on the forums about the fact that they find something on the "what do i need to trade" list and then are devastated that they cannot get the swap after they have entered their item?

i've never found this list helpful in the least. the mere fact that you have done before and after searches proves how much time it can waste to use those lists even as a guideline. but hey, if you have the time to waste, i guess who am i to say you need another hobby? lol

at the very least, swaptree should have a huge disclaimer(and i say huge and i mean it literally because there are just too many people who do not read standard sized warnings) that the list is not accurate and should not be taken as a true indication of what you can get for what you have.

or maybe just have a sticky thread about it at the top of the forums so that people can see it first thing and save themselves some grief.

I've made a few suggestions regarding how this could be redeemed; they have so far been met with almost usually complete silence.

What I find the search useful for is learning how much demand there is for something I don't have but might pick up in a library book sale, or how much relative demand there is for items that I may be equally interested in trading for. That's why it's not a useless feature. That's not what it was designed for, but it does the job, comparable to a paper clip as a useful tool for cleaning your ears. One of my other hobbies...

RE: Help this makes no sense

Yes, I chased my tail around, too last week, when I found a book I wanted that was supposedly available for a book that was already on my Have list. What an absolute waste of time. And frustrating knowing there are books in the system I want, but lack the proper puzzle piece to get them.

On the other side, my Have list indicates two books in which I can get about 3,000 books for either of them. Except, none are any of the books on my actual WL. I did look at a few that were potential possibilities, but they ultimately did not make my Want list. Instead, I'm now keeping those two books until a WL book does come up or a new book gets listed that I am more interested in than the ones I looked at. It's like playing chess and knowing I have a potential Queen for trade.

everything you have on your have list has the potential to reap something you want. it may not be immediately, but sometime in the future, even that book that has sat there with nothing available for it for months, may one day pop up something awesome on your get it now list. i've had this happen more than once.

even then tho, i browse the "what i can get" lists for the items i have posted (the list that you get to from my "items i have" page, really the ONLY useful browsing list) for new ideas of things to want. i've discovered several books this way that have quickly become favorites of mine. plus with the holidays coming up, i browse to see if i can find gifts for friends and family. its like browsing in a store. you never know what you might find thats worthwhile ^_^
