Prohibited Video Games-trading copied or Subscription copies
Recently we’ve noticed some users attempting to trade games acquired through a subscription service like STEAM™. There are other game subscription services as well. The trading of games acquired from any such service is strictly prohibited by both the Service Vendor and Federal Copyright Law.
For trading purposes all Video Games must be the ORIGINAL Disc as created by the Artist(s). The copying of Video Games is a violation of United States Copyright Law. Swaptree, of course, does not support the trading of any copied materials.
We ask that users immediately remove any and all copied and or Subscription games from their trading list and refrain from listing any of these items. Any violations will result in the suspension of your account pending a review AND could result in permanent suspension from Swaptree.

When I first joined Swaptree (fairly recently) I saw a lot of games that were online subscription games. There appeared to be no monitoring of that type of game, nor restriction. A trader would obviously have to give up their account and /or account info. For example Guild Wars and World of Warcraft both have been seen as trades.STEAM games I was not aware of since you are required to log or the game cant be played, but your not giving up a character nor an account ongoing . I recently made the mistake of listing a Steam game and it was traded.I would like to make this right with the new owner if I can.I have contacted the new owner and hope to straighten this out. Thanks

How do you know the difference?

...knowing the difference
All games that are MMO's or Massively Multiplayer Online games such as Guild Wars,WOW,Everquest,Warhammer online,Age of Conan etc., etc. clearly state they are multiplayer online game, and a subscription may or may not be required to play. In these cases if you bought that game new and NEVER registered an account or played it,then a Swaptree owner could start the game with a new account using that games CD/DVD keycode. But if the game has been USED (and obviously registered to play online)then the person your selling it to here would find it virtually impossible to use it,without your account information and email address. STEAM games will also state that an account or registering is required to play (look on the package/box it will say this). The keycode is "assigned" or linked to that persons account and once bought on SWAPTREE,the new owner won't be able to play that game, because you have to register it to "unlock" the games execution. And since the new owner is not the ORIGINAL owner, without the same registery info for the account, the game wont play. To sum it up unless your selling one of these games as BRAND NEW sealed and/or unREGISTERED its no good to the new owner. Not to mention it usually violates the EULA agreement.Buyer beware-look up the game on the net before you select to swap, and see if its an online game or if registration is REQUIRED to play.

Swapping Steam-activated games
I just made a trade to receive Counter-Strike Source. The disks arrived, but I can't activate the games due to a duplicate cd key error. Has anyone else run into this problem when swapping steam games? I have contacted the trader and requested that he "gift" the games to my steam account, but I guess I'm SOL if he doesn't - he would get to keep the game and I'm out an item... of course I have these worthless disks as a consolation prize. No way I would propagate the bad karma by trading them on without a transferable key. Are there other experiences out there I can draw from? Does this type of trader get banned from the site?
Thanks!

Prohibited by Staff...
You should rightfully report the transaction. As stated earlier in this thread the SWAPTREE staff DOES prohibit this kind of trade and would seek restitution by banning Im sure,if the trader wont make the trade good in some fashion.Reporting these trades AND investigating the game first via the game site may help you make better decisions in the future.

There are Retail Games
There are Retail Games that require you to register a code to your Steam Account (and I'm sure other types as well), the reason I know this is because of 752919493816 Dawn of War II which if marked "Like New" or below, people should be very wary of. When I bought the game I was so amazed that there was suddenly NO Resale Value to the game. Kinda stinks that I'm the only one who can use it now!

Continuing violation of traders
This thread is intended to help or try to help those that may be unknowing of primarily PC games that are required to be registered to the original purchaser or user. I have currently looked at a lot of PC games up for trade that if traded for will more than likely not be useable by the new owner. MY question about all this is WHY the staff of this site does not prohibited even the posting of these games? STEAM accounts are a prime example of this as are online games. Why doesnt the site ban a post of any Steam game, until proven it is not previously registered? Buyer beware yes of course, but it wouldn't be that hard to just ban all online game trades, and steam account required trades. The people that are posting these trades KNOW they created an account in order to play the game. I saw EVERQUEST games,WARHAMMER, TABULA ROSA, GUILD WARS, etc.,etc. These are DEFINITELY online required registration in order to play. If you trade for one of these, you MUST have the registered players information (and sometimes email address) to play it. I wish the staff of this site would address this issue, and not just turn a blind eye to it.

I'm on the other end of this kind of thing: I had two copies of The Orange Box that we no longer need, so I posted them to my Have List and traded one of them... only to realize after the trade was already started that the person I'd be sending to wouldn't be able to play the games because the code's already been activated. I've offered to send him a "gift" copy through Steam (he's going to check for playability first before we actually go through with that), which now means I'm out $30. Wouldn't have added them here if I'd known the CD key only works for the Steam ACCOUNT and not the computer.
There should be some kind of prompt on Steam games. I know better now, but asking "Was this game activated on Steam?" might help curb the problem a bit.

Agreed Spark. This is not my website, nor do I work for Swaptree, but it seems that the site owners would address this issue other than a warning not to post, with basically no penalty for doing so. This community provides income for the site, via advertising,ad-clicks,and extra postage bought via the site. You'd think that even a moderator of this chat area would comment on this thread with some helpful feedback and whether or not they are working on a viable solution to the PC area of their swapping. Its a fact that some people are going to be taken by the posted trades that they are not aware are pre-registered games, and will not be playable on arrival. I too was guilty of not thinking about the STEAM accounts. I also was taken by HALF LIFE 2 that I traded for and cant use. This should be addressed by the site, and why its not I cant imagine???
