description
Originally released in 1978, YOU SEND ME finds Roy Ayers smack in the middle of his crossover jazz phase. In fact, the album more often resembles an R&B set, complete with quiet storm tracks, than it does a jazz outing. This is due in part to the presence of vocalist Carla Vaughn, whose sexy, flexible voice fleshes out some of the disc's best tracks (including the Sam Cooke cover of the title). Elsewhere, Ayers's penchant for cool-toned, funky groove rules, such as on the disco-tinged dance number, "Get On Up, Get on Down." Ayers's vibraphone playing is topnotch throughout, as is the playing from his back-up group, Ubiquity. The 2008 remastered version brings this crossover gem back into crisp-sounding circulation.
