WOW GOSPEL ESSENTIALS is a rewarding primer of contemporary gospel performance. While there are established names (CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams) present, there are a few younger proponents who bring a decidedly modern twist to the contemporary genre. Smokie Norful's soulful vocals are buoyed by hip-hop beats, and the sleek vocal group approach of the Tri-City Singers recalls the R&B tradition of harmony groups.
