Found at a bargain price, this lean roundup of booty from Duke Reid's Treasure Isle studios makes for a worthwhile intro disc to one of the most important producers of the late-'60s rocksteady period. Primarily featuring vocal sides, the disc takes in such Reid stars as Alton Ellis ("Girl I've Got a Date"), the Techniques ("You Don't Care"), and Justin Hinds ("Carry Go Bring Home"). Adding to the quality quotient, vintage Jamaican diva Phyllis Dillon delivers her classic take on "Perfidia" and tenor saxophonist and Treasure Isle house bandleader Tommy McCook digs deep on two fine instrumentals. Outclassed by Heartbeat's Duke Reid's Treasure Chest collection (many more key songs and acts), Rock Steady Beat will still provide some choice "dancing mood" moments for all those casual reggae fans out there. ~ Stephen Cook
