There was a time in the mid-'80s when electronic music was at something of an impasse. New Age had become a genre of sorts, while "electronica" was still an unrealized concept. Many were caught in these phase shifts, and folks like Steve Roach, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, and dozens of British and German synth artists found themselves without a categorical branch-and hence an audience-to latch onto.
TRANSFER STATION BLUE fell between the cracks during those confusing times, but its solid reputation has held it in good stead amongst the electronic literati. Michael Shrieve, best known as the drummer in the Santana band, showed a more progressive side to his talents in collaborations with Steve Roach and David Beal. Shrieve is teamed here with his brother Kevin (guitar) and synth master Klaus Schulze. The trio etches out a flight path of high-cruising percussive/electronic exercises. Shrieve's drums take on a hypnotic, mantra-like effect, techno-tribal in spots, while Schulze layers on oozing, bubbling sequencer patterns and soaring washes of synth. Transfer to this station while you still can.
