While GET BEHIND ME SATAN certainly isn't a country album, it does highlight White's fascinatingly unpredictable nature. With the exception of a few songs (including the blistering single "Blue Orchid"), Jack leaves his electric six-string in the garage, opting to roam around with his acoustic guitar (as on the gentle "As Ugly As I Seem") or settle into a marimba- or piano-led melody. As always, Meg White is on hand with her wonderfully unpolished, cymbal-heavy drumming, providing the perfect foil for Jack's intense, mercurial presence. With its quirky narratives about ghosts, nurses, and Rita Hayworth, SATAN is a restless record, and the duo uses that energy to maximum effect, easily making this the White Stripes' most dynamic album to date.
