Folk granddaddy Pete Seeger has held his annual Great Hudson River Revival benefits for as long as the sloop Clearwater has been educating students and citizens about protecting the Hudson River. The concerts have proven to be a showcase for young, rising urban folk talent (quite a change for Seeger considering it was he and folk scholar Alan Lomax who reportedly tried to cut Bob Dylan's sound cables at his infamous Newport Folk Festival electric debut). This, however, is the first ever live document of the perennial event that draws upwards of 20,000 attendees. Fans of urban folkies like John Hall, Vance Gilbert, and Dar Williams will no doubt appreciate their live performances here, but those moments do not stand up to readings of old leftie chestnuts like "If I Had a Hammer" (from Pat Humphries and Josh White, Jr.) and Phil Ochs' righteous "I ain't Marchin' Any More" (the Nields). Seeger himself performs with Tao Rodriguez on "Draft Dodger Rag," but the youngster certainly carries the elder here. Seeger's best days are far behind him, but Clearwater represents just one facet of the towering legacy he will leave us. ~ John Duffy
