Don't blame George Winston. Sure, he helped cement the popularity of Windham Hill, and therefore, New Age, with his instrumental piano recordings, inspiring an entire generation of vapid noodlers to make hot tub music designed to soothe and stupefy. But he's not any more accountable for that than Nirvana is for Bush. As this compilation will attest, Winston comes out of the John Fahey school of folk-based acoustic improvisation, even though he took quite a different path. His warm, meditative piano pieces cover a lot of ground here, as he works his way through his own compositions as well as those by Pete Seeger, Larry Young, Vince Guaraldi, and even Pachelbel. Don't hate him because he's mellow.
