In the wake of the successful MIDNIGHT TO MIDNIGHT, the Psychedelic Furs recorded a new track, "All that Money Wants," with producer Stephen Street and added it to their compilation album, ALL OF THIS AND NOTHING. In addition to the new track, the collection includes several tracks from each of their first four albums and one from the MIDNIGHT TO MIDNIGHT. Though no doubt fans will be able to quibble endlessly about certain omissions, the thing to keep in mind is that the Furs recorded a lot of amazing material, and nothing here is less than great.
Though not presented in chronological order, the tracks here show the band's progression from their punk roots (their self-titled debut) though a suave, slickly commercial phase (MIRROR MOVES and MIDNIGHT TO MIDNIGHT) and to the birth of a new sound that incorporates both of the previous ones ("All that Money Wants," which shows the way to the band's last two albums, BOOK OF DAYS and WORLD OUTSIDE). Standouts include the blustery "Imitation of Christ," the alternately smooth and jagged sounds of "Love My Way," and the gorgeous exploding chorus of "Heartbreak Beat." All in all, this is a nicely compiled introduction to the Furs.
